Response to inquiry of Ry’s scouting activities

Dear XXXX,

Sorry, it has taken so long to get back to you, this weekend was totally hectic with baseball games and Brownie award ceremonies, now it is the work week and I can relax some!

We are part of a “regular” troop, there is only one other boy I know of that has a bunch of issues.

By our experience, I am very comfortable being the minority.  Our troop is very supportive and basically let’s Ryan do everything everyone else does, with the exception of using firearms.  However, special arrangements are in the works to give him a chance to try this as well, I’m still not sure how I feel about this, but my dh is in law enforcement…

Ryan’s comfort level has been challenged many times, he is not big on long hikes, but he can do it.  He loves first aid, and patrol/troop challenges.  What he lacks in visual acuity, he more than makes up for in stamina and enthusiasm.  He is very eager to do what he can when it comes to teamwork, and is always ready to do his share, and especially enjoys service projects.

This last campout was our Camporee, and reports trickled back to me that Ry was getting frustrated by all the offers of assistance.  To me, this is good news, as I would rather he get frustrated with thr troop, than for the troop to get frustrated with him.

We are nearly through with our Tenderfoot requirements, and this upcoming Court of Awards, Ry is excited about receiving his Totem and Fire’man awards.

I think a tradional troop is a very good fit for us, however, we may just be lucky to have such a well organized and welcoming troop in our area. However, I’m sure a group of visually impaired boys would have it’s very own benefits.  There is such a group at a school for the visually impaired in Ohio (??), so you may want to contact them, sorry, I can’t find a link.

Anyhow, hope this email has been helpful, sorry it was mostly bragging, but in the grand scheme of things, we would not be so sucessfull, if not for those around us.

Thank you, Judith
